Circle Singing & Vocal Improvisation

Instructor: Debby Boland Watt, MFA-IA, BM

We take off SINGING! This Circle Singing choir uses all your previous vocal skills and experience. Debby gives each choral part, building the piece as she goes. Free form and spontaneous, these beautifully complex pieces use layered rhythm and melodic patterns, call and response, vocal percussion and free improvisation. Students can then choose to enter the center of our circle for further development by adding solos, creating duets or restructuring the circle completely.

Attentive listening skills and a firm grasp of rhythmic forms are important. With this in mind, I’ve designed this workshop for students for High School age and above.

Though facilitated, our time together holds space for sounding together with compassionate purpose and intentional listening. Both ideas increase greater connection to each other. And create a space of resonant Joy.

Students need to know:

  1. Wear warm clothing as the Steam Plant can be chilly in May

  2. Bring Water. NO aluminum bottles, plz!

  3. Space is ADA-accessible. Honey Bucket on the grounds.
