An Evening at the Steam Plant: Beyond Bach
Experience a classic like Bach cello suite 1 in the most resonant way possible at the Georgetown Steam Plant and open your mind to the possibilities of what the cello is capable of in such a space. Bella will be taking you on a tour of musical time periods with much emphasis on current music, especially female composed.
Imagine the sound of the cello rising and falling through the intricate web of industrial pipes, its deep resonance echoing off the concrete and metal machinery. This is more than a concert; it's a conversation between the past and the present—an intimate moment where the delicate strength of the cello finds an epic stage, reminding us that art, like industry, is always evolving.
Doors open at 6:00 PM and will close promptly at 7:00 PM.
Bella's performance will begin at 7:00pm

SPAM New Media Festival
SPAM New Media Festival returns for its third iteration in 2025, taking place at Seattle’s iconic Georgetown Steam Plant. Joining the ongoing efforts to remake this “industrial cathedral” into a space for community art and culture, the festival considers what custodianship and curation might mean in such a setting.
This year’s edition brings together over 30 practitioners from around the world who work from a postdigital perspective. Through installations, performances, and discussions, SPAM 2025 presents an international community of artists, musicians, technologists, and thinkers exploring urgent questions of our time.
Organized and curated by a team of community art workers, the program includes meditations on borders, commons, deep time, and bodies; a video game about caretaking; a VR experience about climate; and even a surveilling balloon. Expect slime moulds, sink holes, post-apocalyptic landscapes—and something lurking in the boiler.
Audiences are invited to a weekend of critically engaged, experimental, and research-focused new media work. Doors open at 5pm each day, with live performances on Friday and Saturday nights.

What is Cascadia?
A Bioregional Vision for a Resilient Future
Social movements are needed now more than ever. As the climate crisis deepens, political systems falter, and our extractive economies threaten the very fabric of life on Earth, people everywhere are rising to meet the moment and asking a crucial question: What comes next?
Join us to explore this question with Brandon Letsinger, a longtime champion of Cascadia and founder of Cascadia Now! and the Department of Bioregion. Brandon will share his over two-decade journey in grassroots organizing and reveal the bold vision behind Regenerate Cascadia, an ambitious effort to build regenerative systems at a bioregional scale.
Set inside the historic Georgetown Steam Plant—a relic of our fossil-fueled past now transforming into a platform for reimagined futures—this talk will explore the personal, political, and collective dimensions of movement-building. Building on the Science Fair’s theme, “Break the System,” we’ll dive into:
The Power of Bioregional Finance: How to align money with ecology to heal land and build regenerative, circular economies.
The Role of Watershed Regeneration: Restoring our relationship with the land and water that sustain all life.

Mapping our Petrofuture
An Evening at the Steam Plant: Conspiracy of Cartographers
Join us for an evening of maps, imagination, and critical climate dialogue with Jeffrey Linn—artist, cartographer, and visionary futurist. Renowned for his acclaimed “petrofuture” maps, Linn blends scientific projection with speculative storytelling to illustrate how unchecked emissions, rising seas, and unraveling industrial systems could reshape our cities and coastlines.
Featured in The Washington Post, Grist, Foreign Policy, and praised by the late Ursula K. Le Guin, and examined by Snopes, Linn’s work invites us to confront the deep, layered histories of place while daring us to envision radically different futures.
Through incisive cartography and community conversation, we’ll explore how creative mapping can expose the consequences of inaction and inspire bold strategies for adaptation, industrial revolution, and ecological regeneration—beginning here in the Duwamish River Valley.
This is a free event. To learn more, please register here!

Bladerunner (1986) Screening @ GTSP
Step into the cyberpunk world of Blade Runner (1982) inside one of Seattle’s most striking industrial landmarks. Directed by Ridley Scott, this sci-fi classic follows Rick Deckard, a weary detective tasked with tracking down rogue replicants—synthetic humans with complex emotions and limited lifespans. Set in a dystopian future drenched in rain and neon, Blade Runner is a haunting meditation on humanity, artificial intelligence, and moral ambiguity. It’s a story that still speaks volumes today—and it hits differently when viewed inside the aging bones of the Georgetown Steam Plant.
This screening is part of the Steam Plant’s evolving public programming series.program designed to foster dialogue, reflection, and connection through cinema. Before the film begins, guests are invited to take part in a walkthrough of the Steam Plant to learn more about its past and evolving future as a community-centered cultural site. A post-film conversation will follow the screening for those who wish to engage.

City of God Screening @ GTSP
The Georgetown Steam Plant invites you to a special community screening of City of God (2002), directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund. Based on true events, this critically acclaimed film tells the story of youth navigating power, violence, and survival in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. Gritty, stunningly shot, and deeply human, the film is a powerful exploration of systemic injustice and the resilience of communities living under pressure.
This screening is part of GTSP’s film series—a program designed to foster dialogue, reflection, and connection through cinema. Before the film begins, guests are invited to take part in a walkthrough of the Steam Plant to learn more about its past and evolving future as a community-centered cultural site. We’ll go over some basic safety notes before the screening. It’s a beautiful space, but also an old one with machinery, hard concrete, and low-lit zones.

Pinhole Photography Camp: Science, Art, and Photography
July 7th – July 12
For Students Entering Grades 6-12 in Fall 2025
10AM-4PM (Monday-Saturday).
Participants build their own pinhole cameras, learn how to evaluate
lighting and exposure time, explore ideas of visual composition, i.e., what
makes a “good photo,” and learn how to use the chemistry of a black & white photographic darkroom on site to develop their own photographs.
In contrast to remote-learning, online simulations, digital, and virtual experiences, this will be a hands-on analog experience.
The Georgetown Steam Plant visually inspires students with its
photogenic, industrial-age architecture and design which truly represent
the original “Steam-Punk,” all in support of education, art, and science
learning. Students will explore the Georgetown Steam Plant as a scientific,
technologic, historic, and creative space.
Instructors: Eric Muhs & Dan Pickard are “mostly-retired” Seattle Public
Schools science teachers with nearly 50 years of science teaching and pinhole photography instruction between them. Cost and further details at the website link below. Them

Parasite Screening @ GTSP
Join us for a unique evening at the Georgetown Steam Plant as we screen Bong Joon-ho’s Academy Award–winning masterpiece, Parasite. This film is a razor-sharp social thriller about class, labor, survival, and the systems that trap us—and one that resonates deeply within a building like this, once pivotal to Seattle’s industrial expansion, now trying to find new life in a rapidly changing city.
The GTSP team is actively working to transform this historic industrial space into a place that fosters reflection, dialogue, and community. These film nights are part of that work—holding space for stories that challenge, connect, and move us.
Before the screening, at 6:30pm, there’ll be a short walkthrough of the Steam Plant and what it’s been (and what we’re dreaming it can become). The film will begin promptly at 7:30 PM, followed by an optional post-screening conversation.
Parasite is a film that makes you feel the walls closing in—and still dares you to laugh. I’m looking forward to watching it with folks ready to feel, reflect, and maybe even reimagine what this space can mean for all of us.
