The Georgetown Steam Plant invites you to a special community screening of City of God (2002), directed by Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund. Based on true events, this critically acclaimed film tells the story of youth navigating power, violence, and survival in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. Gritty, stunningly shot, and deeply human, the film is a powerful exploration of systemic injustice and the resilience of communities living under pressure.

This screening is part of GTSP’s film series—a program designed to foster dialogue, reflection, and connection through cinema. Before the film begins, guests are invited to take part in a walkthrough of the Steam Plant to learn more about its past and evolving future as a community-centered cultural site. A post-film conversation will follow the screening for those who wish to engage.

This isn’t just a movie screening—it’s an invitation to reflect, to feel, and to reimagine. Khalil, the host, and Community Engagement Coordinator will be giving a short walkthrough of the space at 6:30pm, before the film starts at 7:30pm, and we’ll close the night with a post-film conversation for anyone who wants to stay and unpack what we’ve witnessed together.

Before You Arrive:

• The Steam Plant was built in 1906 and wasn’t exactly designed for comfort. There’s no heat, no AC, and the chairs are…functional. Bring a blanket, cushion, or whatever will help you settle in.

• We’ll go over some basic safety notes before the screening. It’s a beautiful space, but also an old one with machinery, hard concrete, and low-lit zones.

• Suggested donation: $5–10 (to help cover costs of programming). No pressure—come as you are and give what makes sense for you.

• Capacity is limited to 40 people, so RSVP with a YES to save your seat. "Maybe's" need to become "Yes's" to save your seat!
